Blue layering crochet Top
This top is definitely my most tremendous crochet success so far. I have received many compliments on it, and people have even offered me money to make them one. I have begun replicating this pattern in a two-tone pink design however I still think the blue is the coolest.
I think that the most critical aspect of this top is the choice of yarn, the yarn can not be chunky or fluffy in any way but still be thick enough to hold defined triple crochets. I opted for the Paintbox Cotton Aran Yarn in shades: Marine Blue and Kingfisher Blue. Although this top would look cool with any two-tone shades of yarn.
This top is definitely a layering piece and not one which is to be worn on its own. I have picked two ways that the top can be worn: above is how I wore this top to a club night with a bikini top more as a statement piece and below is how I styled it to a work night out with a white cami top on underneath.
Pattern:
1)Begin using the darker shade of yarn and chain 83 and tie together (ensure it fits over head-if not then add more chains)
2)Press ends together and add 4 stitch markers, 2 mm in from ends on each side
3)Chain 4, skip the next chain and double crochet into the chain after, chain one and skip a chain, repeat this until you reach your first stitch marker
4)Here you will add one increase stitch, then return to repeating the pattern (in bold) and add one increase at every stitch marker
5)When you have completed the first row you will slip stitch into what was the first chain of the row and chain 4 again
6)You will now turn your work and double crochet into your previous row as you did before, when you hit the stitch markers in this row you will again crochet in another increase.
7)At the end of very two rows of crochet when you are going to turn your work you will tie on the other shade of yarn and cut off the excess as well as the previous yarn you finished your row with and continue crocheting as you did before.
8)You will repeat this pattern (ensuring you turn your work each row) until when trying on the top it reaches under your armpits for me this was 11 rows.
9)When you complete this 11th row you will slip stitch into the first stitch as before and continue the pattern until you reach your first stitch marker.
10)This time at the increase instead of adding another crochet you will chain stitch to meet the next increase (for me this was 10 stitches) when you meet this increase, slip stitch into it to create your first armhole.
11)Then triple crochet into the last row until you hit your next increase. Repeat the same crochet chain to meet your next increase (this will create your second arm hole) slip stitch into the increase and finish the row by double crocheting into the previous row. You now have armholes and little tiny sleeves.
12)Chain 4 again and this time instead of crocheting all the way around the last row you will double crochet up to the first increase then follow the chain stitch, continuing to double crochet until you get to the next increase now follow the front of the top around then follow the chain stitch until you meet the other side.
13)double crochet till you meet the first stitch.
14)Continue this pattern for how many rows you wish and tie off the end. These last few rows of crochet are dependent on how long you want your top to be, I chose to crochet round for 4 more rows.
15) From here, go back to your armholes and crochet back into them following a double crochet pattern and changing colour every two rows. You follow this down until the arm is long enough for your preference (mine was 12 rows in total) now, using either colour do two rows of single crochet and tie off your work, repeat this with the other sleeve.
That is your top complete !!
